Trace Evidence Analysis

About general trace evidence

Sometimes a piece of evidence at a crime scene does not fall into the categories of paint, fibers, or fire debris. This "unknown" material—such as a black powder or a smear on a tool—may be the key to solving a case.

The UBFS is equipped to help in these situations. We use the same methodologies as our other trace disciplines to characterize, identify, and compare these unknown trace materials to a known sample.

      Submitting a case

General trace cases and samples are accepted with prior approval from the Chemistry section manager.
